During some of the most difficult years of my life, Bob Marley\u2019s music became more than entertainment. It gave me a place to steady my thoughts when life felt uncertain. His music carried messages of endurance, freedom, responsibility, faith, and resistance\u2014messages that spoke directly to the struggles I was experiencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I say Bob Marley\u2019s music saved me, I do not mean that it removed my problems. The music helped me live through them. It reminded me that hardship did not have to destroy my spirit and that injustice did not have to control my response. When anger, disappointment, and frustration could have pulled me in the wrong direction, the music helped bring me back to myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the 1990s, I was trained in executive protection, a role that carried substantial responsibilities. Influenced by my own experiences in law enforcement, public safety, and life, I created a phrase that expressed how I understood responsibility, protection, restraint, and purposeful action:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Righteous Assault Suppression, Takes Action, Much As Necessary.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first letter of each word spells RASTA MAN<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To me, RASTA MAN was more than a memorable acronym. It represented the belief that confronting danger or injustice should be righteous in purpose, measured in response, and limited to what is necessary. Action should never be driven by cruelty, ego, or revenge. It should be taken to protect, correct, and restore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word \u201crighteous\u201d was important. It meant that the purpose behind an action mattered. \u201cAssault suppression\u201d represented stopping violence, harm, or destructive behavior. \u201cTakes action\u201d meant that principles must eventually become behavior. \u201cMuch as necessary\u201d established the boundary: do what the situation requires, but no more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believed strongly enough in the originality and meaning of the phrase that I filed it with the Georgia Secretary of State\u2019s office during Max Cleland’s administration. Although decades have passed and I no longer possess the filing details, taking that step showed how seriously I regarded the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bob Marley\u2019s music helped shape the emotional ground from which RASTA MAN grew. His music showed me that strength did not always have to shout and that resistance did not require losing control. A person could oppose injustice while protecting his peace. He could stand firmly without surrendering his humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back, RASTA MAN anticipated principles that would later become central to The TREE Method\u2122<\/strong>. Taking responsibility sometimes requires action. Enduring everything does not mean remaining passive in the presence of wrongdoing. It means responding with discipline, wisdom, restraint, and purpose\u2014doing what is necessary without becoming consumed by the very thing you are trying to overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RASTA MAN emerged from an earlier season of my life, but its roots continued growing. Bob Marley\u2019s music helped keep those roots alive. It encouraged me when I needed it, perspective when I felt overwhelmed, and rhythm when life seemed out of balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The music did not fight my battles for me. It helped me develop the spirit to keep fighting them for myself. Years later, The TREE Method\u2122 would give that philosophy a broader structure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
